also have a look at (another) Bertie
Bertie is a large 1 year old Beagle and when Nikki and her partner contacted me they were at their wits end with him. Not only had Bertie chomped his way through their home , but if he got his paws on something of theirs and they tried to get it back off him…..well look out!! Bertie would nip you and he wasn’t messing around.
Bertie was also a terrible food thief, they couldn’t turn their backs while preparing food for 5 seconds, because if they did…..gone.
And as for possibly sitting in front of the TV and having supper on your lap…..forget it….Bertie would be on your lap and your supper down his throat.
And just I case you are wondering why they didn’t sit at the table and have their supper? Bertie had eaten the table legs off !!
I know all of the above might sound a little amusing, but I felt for this couple . They were really doing all they could ,and this wasn’t a case of a dog not getting enough exercise. Nikki regularly hired a dog walker when out at work and other family members helped out walking him too. They had recently used another behaviourist with limited success , so I had to ‘ come up with the goods ‘ ASAP .
Very clear rules and boundaries needed to be laid down with this situation. Consistency was paramount with everyone interacting with Bertie and there was no room for error.
We made a lot of progress within my 2 hour training session with Bertie and we parted all feeling very optimistic. But of course…..the proof is in the eating.
I was very pleased to receive this update from Nikki recently…
Hi Tricia…..Bertie is doing so well with his training. I’ve attached a picture taken this morning.
I never thought this would ever be possible, so thank you so much for all your help.
Kind regards
Nikki
