A LIFETIME WITH DOGS
Hello! And thank you for taking the time to watch my video.
I am Tricia Wills and I am a qualified Dog Behaviourist, I’ve been around dogs for pretty much the whole of my life and decided to take my hobby a little more seriously.
MY JOURNEY WITH DOGS
My journey with dogs began over 30 years ago when I would often offer advice to friends that might be struggling with their dog’s behaviour whilst we were out walking together around towns, villages, country lanes, fields and even on the beach.
One particular friend said to me . . . “Tricia you have a flair for this, you should take it up as a career”.
And this is precisely what I did! So 18 years ago I studied and qualified and became a canine psychologist and behaviourist!!!
DOG BEHAVIOURIST OR A DOG TRAINER?
Firstly I would like to take the time to explain what a dog behaviourist actually is?
There seems to be a bit of confusion in this matter – Is a behaviourist a trainer or is a trainer a behaviourist?
OK – A TRAINER is a person that can teach your dog, either individually or at a designated training class.
They should be qualified but this is a non regulated profession, meaning you do not need formal qualfication.
A BEHAVIOURIST is a person who has studied and qualified in Dog Psychology and has a knowledge, expertise and understanding of the psychology of a dog in why it shows certain behaviour in certain situations . . . in other words . . .
‘HOW THE CANINE BRAIN IN PARTICULAR TICKS’.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR DOG’S BEHAVIOUR
My ethos or beliefs in understanding your dogs behaviour is based upon understanding how and why dogs naturally behave and interact amongst each other, in other words – how the pack rolls along.
You may say ‘I do not have a pack of dogs though’? But you have to remember that every time your dog meets another dog, he or she is actually meeting another pack. It might be a pack of 1 or a pack of 2 dogs, but hierarchy, pecking order and placement will need to be established – sometimes this may go well and sometimes it will not go so well.
DOGS – WITH UNDERSTANDING COMES PLEASURE
I am very fortunate to be having one of the best jobs teaching people how to understand their dogs and get the very best from them. Working with many various breeds of dogs for over 30 years has given me a greater understanding and insight to how they naturally behave with an in depth knowledge of why they exhibit certain behaviour traits at certain times. It could be a reactive behaviour towards another dog or aggressive behaviour towards people coming to your house.
General dog excitability, separation anxiety problems, general nervousness or anxieties. This is the type of work I do and get such enormous satisfaction and pleasure from helping people changing their dogs lives
OUR WONDERFUL DOGS
As wonderful as dogs can be and as compassionate and understanding we can all be with our canine friends, they are famous for missing the point!
And will need that little bit of guidance from a Canine Behaviourist to keep our lives together on track!
